Pakistan, Afghanistan, and UAE to Clash in Sharjah T20I Tri-Series Ahead of Asia Cup 2025
In a timely warm-up ahead of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the UAE will face off in a T20I tri-series hosted by the Emirates Cricket Board. The series is set to take place in Sharjah during August and September, offering valuable match practice for all three sides before the Asia Cup kicks off on September 9.
Round-Robin Format to Decide Finalists
According to the fixtures, each team will play the other twice in the round-robin stage. The two top-performing teams will progress to the final. All matches will begin at 7 PM local time, adding prime-time excitement under the Sharjah lights.
This tri-series was scheduled in place of Pakistan’s previously planned T20I series against Afghanistan, as outlined in the ICC’s Future Tours Programme. Now, all three teams will benefit from competitive action ahead of a major continental tournament.
Rankings and Readiness
Among the three, Pakistan holds the highest position on the ICC T20I rankings at No. 8, followed closely by Afghanistan at No. 9. The UAE trails at No. 14 but will look to punch above its weight in home conditions.
Pakistan are currently involved in a white-ball series against the West Indies, having already taken the lead in the opening game. Their Asia Cup campaign begins on September 12 against Oman. Afghanistan, meanwhile, haven’t played a T20I since they toured Zimbabwe at the end of last year and will open their Asia Cup journey against Hong Kong on September 9.
Eyes on the 2026 T20 World Cup
Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have already secured direct qualification for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan qualified as one of the top seven non-host teams from the previous edition, while Pakistan earned their spot via their ICC ranking as of June 30, 2024, cut-off.
The UAE, however, are yet to confirm their place in the global tournament. They will head to Oman in October for the Asia-East Asia & Pacific regional qualifiers, taking place from October 8 to 17, in a bid to earn their World Cup berth.
