PSL to Expand to Eight Teams from 2026
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will expand to eight franchises starting in 2026. The upcoming 2025 season, the tenth edition of the league, will be the final six-team tournament. Multan Sultans’ addition in 2018 remains the only expansion since the league’s inception. The process of selecting cities for the new franchises has not yet begun.
The tenth season also coincides with the expiry of the ten-year franchise lease agreements. All six existing owners have right of first refusal, meaning they can retain ownership if they match the franchise’s valuation. Despite joining later, the Sultans’ lease will also be up for renewal in 2025.
Proposed Permanent Shift to April-May Window
The PCB is considering a permanent shift of the PSL window to April and May, a period that would overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL). This proposal aims to provide a reliable schedule amid increasing conflicts with other leagues, including the ILT20 and SA20. For 2026, the preferred window spans six weeks, from April 7 to May 20.
Some PSL franchises have expressed concerns over the move, citing player availability and the league competing directly with the IPL. At least three franchises remain opposed, though the PCB is confident a consensus can be reached. The governing council has final authority, meaning the PCB could implement the change with or without franchise approval.
Player Recruitment Adjustments
To address concerns about overseas player availability, the PCB has proposed adjustments to player recruitment rules. Franchises may be allowed to sign one marquee player independently of the draft. The financial and scheduling overlap with the IPL, however, means that only players not participating in the IPL are likely to be available for the PSL.
This limitation may impact teams such as Lahore Qalandars, who retained Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan for PSL 2024 but could see him unavailable if the new window coincides with the IPL.
Potential Playoffs and Finals in the UK
The PCB is also exploring the possibility of holding the playoffs and final of PSL 2025 in the United Kingdom. Mid-May temperatures in Lahore can reach the mid-40s, making the UK a safer and more cost-effective option. This move would not only address weather concerns but also help globalize the PSL’s reach, offering broader exposure compared to previous hosting in the UAE.
