Konstas Headlines Australia A Squad with Focus on Subcontinent Preparation
19-Year-Old Opener Among Few Test-Capped Players Selected for India Tour
Teenage opener Sam Konstas is the only current Test incumbent selected for Australia A’s upcoming tour of India, as selectors focus on grooming the next generation for the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The 19-year-old’s road to securing his spot for this summer’s Ashes series takes a detour through the subcontinent, where he’ll feature in two first-class matches against India A in Lucknow next month.
A Glimpse at the Next Generation
Konstas will be joined by Cooper Connolly, Todd Murphy, and Nathan McSweeney—the only other Test-capped players in the 14-man red-ball squad.
The first-class leg of the tour is viewed as a critical development opportunity, particularly with an eye on the next BGT series in early 2027.
“The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball,” said national selector George Bailey.
“We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will help players develop effective methods for future tours in Asia.”
White-Ball Youth Movement in Kanpur
Following the red-ball matches, a less-experienced one-day squad will play three List A games in Kanpur. The group includes five players under 21 and no one over 26, with selectors investing in emerging talent.
The white-ball squad features several members of the Under-19 World Cup-winning team, including Callum Vidler, Harry Dixon, and Tom Straker, all of whom are set to make their Australia A debuts.
Notably, Aaron Hardie, 26, is the oldest player in the one-day squad.
Konstas Under Scrutiny After Caribbean Struggles
While Konstas made headlines last summer with a fearless Boxing Day debut innings against India, his Test place is far from secure following a tough series in the Caribbean.
On difficult, bowler-friendly pitches, Konstas failed to pass 25 across six innings, raising concerns ahead of the Ashes. His selection for this tour signals that selectors are eager to expose him to the subcontinent’s unique conditions while acknowledging his relative inexperience.
He was previously omitted from the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Selectors Prioritise Domestic Form and Youth
Notably absent from the A squad are Marnus Labuschagne, Scott Boland, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Sean Abbott—all of whom were part of the Caribbean tour.
Instead, selectors have turned to standout Sheffield Shield performers, including Corey Rocchiccioli, Fergus O’Neill, Jack Edwards, Lance Morris, Josh Philippe, Campbell Kellaway, and Ollie Peake.
Players like Hardie, Connolly, Sangha, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who were left out of Australia’s current ODI squad to face South Africa, will also look to impress.
Sheffield Shield Priority for Red-Ball Players
Following the conclusion of the second four-day match on September 26, most red-ball squad members will return home in time for the opening round of the 2025-26 Sheffield Shield season, beginning October 4.
Bailey confirmed that short-form development remains a consideration for several red-ball players, but the Sheffield Shield remains a key priority in their ongoing progression.
“Balancing priorities meant we wanted them back and available for the start of the Shield season,” he said.
Notable Omissions and Surprises
Despite strong performances in the recent Australia A series against Sri Lanka in Darwin, century-makers Jake Weatherald, Jason Sangha, and Matthew Renshaw were not retained for the India tour.
NSW wicketkeeper Lachie Shaw, with just four List A games to his name, was a surprise selection in the white-ball squad, edging out more experienced options.
