As reported by Crichd, England have announced their squad for the fifth and final Test match against India, with Jamie Overton making a return. The selectors have opted to retain most of the core squad that has featured throughout the series, with minor changes made to address fatigue and injuries.
England captain Ben Stokes highlighted the importance of recovery following the exhausting fourth Test, where his side bowled a massive number of overs.
“These recovery days are going to be pretty important,” said Stokes. “We might have to make a few decisions to get some fresh legs in. But that won’t be decided until we get closer to the last game.”
So far, England have maintained a fairly consistent bowling lineup. Jofra Archer replaced Josh Tongue after the first two Tests, and Liam Dawson was brought in for the injured Shoaib Bashir at Old Trafford. Chris Woakes has been the workhorse of the attack, delivering 167 overs, followed closely by Brydon Carse (155) and Stokes himself (140). Meanwhile, Archer is still finding his rhythm after returning to Test cricket following a four-year absence.
Gus Atkinson, who recently regained full fitness after a hamstring issue while playing for Surrey’s 2nd XI, is also in contention and may be a replacement for Woakes. Despite not playing in the last two Tests, Josh Tongue remains England’s second-highest wicket-taker in the series and is another viable option. A recall for Jamie Overton, who hasn’t played a Test since his debut in 2022, is also on the cards.
To aid recovery, England have cancelled their Tuesday training session and will resume preparations at The Oval on Wednesday.
