Matt Henry Shines with Sixth Test Five-Wicket Haul

Matt Henry delivered a clinical bowling performance, taking 5 for 40, as Zimbabwe crumbled to 125 all out on the opening day of the second Test in Bulawayo. It marked Henry’s sixth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, reinforcing his status as a key figure in New Zealand’s pace attack. Debutant Zakary Foulkes also impressed with 4 for 38, as the seamers dismantled a fragile Zimbabwean batting unit.

Taylor’s Return Overshadowed by Familiar Batting Woes

Brendan Taylor’s much-anticipated return to international cricket after a three-and-a-half-year absence was one of the few bright spots for Zimbabwe. Promoted to open the innings, Taylor looked the most composed of Zimbabwe’s batters, scoring a gritty 44. However, his dismissal — a mistimed drive off Henry after lunch — ended a promising two-hour stay at the crease and exposed the lineup’s long-standing vulnerabilities.

Despite his efforts, Zimbabwe posted its lowest total in nine innings. Only Taylor and Tafadzwa Tsiga (33) crossed double figures, with the rest of the batting order collapsing due to poor shot selection and relentless pressure from New Zealand’s quicks.

Seam Attack Leaves Zimbabwe Reeling

Henry struck early, removing Brian Bennett and Nick Welch within the first ten overs. Foulkes and debutant Matthew Fisher complemented Henry with disciplined lines and length. Foulkes removed the experienced Sean Williams and Trevor Gwandu, while Fisher claimed the final wicket of the innings.

Zimbabwe was bowled out inside 49 overs, failing to recover from a series of avoidable dismissals and tactical misjudgments. Notably, Sikandar Raza was once again undone by the short ball — his third such dismissal in as many innings this series.

Conway and Young Build Commanding Reply

In response, New Zealand’s openers Devon Conway and Will Young wiped out Zimbabwe’s total with a commanding 174-run partnership — their third-highest opening stand against Zimbabwe and their first over 150 in nearly three years. Both players displayed positive intent from the outset, with 40 of New Zealand’s first 57 runs coming in boundaries.

Young reached his half-century off just 49 balls and looked poised for his maiden Test century before chopping on for 74 against Gwandu. Conway survived a couple of chances to bring up his 13th Test fifty and finished the day unbeaten on 79, alongside nightwatchman Jacob Duffy.

Zimbabwe Left Searching for Answers

Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled to generate a consistent threat on a pitch that had less bounce than the previous week’s surface. While the return of Taylor offered a glimmer of stability, their batting frailties and inability to sustain pressure with the ball have left them facing a substantial deficit heading into day two.

  • Brendan Taylor: 44 – Top score on return
