BBL 2025-26 Season: Test Stars Given Rare Two-Week Window

Season Schedule and Key Dates

The 2025-26 Big Bash League (BBL) season will run from December 14 to January 25, aligning with Australia’s home Ashes series. Perth Scorchers will host Sydney Sixers in the opening fixture, just three days before the third Ashes Test in Adelaide. The 40-game regular season concludes on January 18, with finals staged from January 20 to 25, ending on the Sunday before the Australia Day holiday.

Test Players’ Availability

With the fifth Ashes Test scheduled in Sydney from January 4–8, Australia’s Test players will potentially be available for the final ten days of the regular season. While selectors expect only certain batters to return immediately after the series, hopes remain that bowlers and allrounders could feature as part of their T20 World Cup 2025 preparations. Ultimately, Cricket Australia’s high-performance team and individual players will decide on availability.

A Boost Compared to Recent Seasons

The new calendar marks a notable improvement over the past three years, when Test tours in late January and February restricted appearances from leading players. Alistair Dobson, Head of the BBL, expressed optimism:

“We earmarked this season from a while back. Having a clear run from mid-December through late January gives us one of the strongest BBL seasons we’ve ever had.”

Scheduling Enhancements

To maximise Test player involvement, every franchise will host a home game in the final week, increasing the likelihood of marquee stars appearing in front of home crowds. Nathan Lyon is expected to make his long-awaited debut for Melbourne Renegades after two years on their roster without playing.

However, several Test regulars remain uncontracted, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, and Cameron Green. Their participation will depend on post-Ashes recovery and preparation plans.

Case-by-Case Availability

Dobson confirmed a flexible approach:

“It’ll come down to individual circumstances, but we see a strong chance for a number of Test players to feature in the back end and finals, which would be a fitting way to close the season.”

Balancing International Commitments

Despite speculation, Cricket Australia resisted shifting the tournament further back by a week to align better with overseas stars returning from the ILT20. Dobson stressed that finishing during the school holiday period and across the Australia Day long weekend remains central to the BBL’s strategy.

Holiday Fixtures and Venues

As in previous years, the BBL will not stage matches on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Australia Day. While the concept of a Christmas Day fixture is reviewed annually, Dobson admitted that broadcaster and club demand “is not there right now.”

Meanwhile, concerns over Marvel Stadium’s playing surface—criticised last season—were dismissed. The Renegades will host three games at the venue, including a Melbourne derby, but their first two matches will be shifted to Geelong.
