Australia’s Big Hitters Face South Africa’s Depth Test in Darwin
Setting the Scene
The last time Australia and South Africa met was at Lord’s a couple of months ago, when South Africa lifted the World Test Championship trophy. This time it’s T20 cricket, with both sides using the series to prepare for the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next February.
Australia is coming off a 5-0 win over West Indies and has even more batting firepower with Travis Head back in the side. South Africa arrived from a tri-series in Zimbabwe, where they lost the final to New Zealand after experimenting with their line-up.
Key Players Back in Action
South Africa has captain Aiden Markram and strike bowler Kagiso Rabada available again, along with opportunities for younger names like Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, and Kwena Maphaka. Coach Shukri Conrad says the aim is to build on good performances from the Zimbabwe trip and give the youngsters more T20 experience.
Australia is resting Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, but Josh Hazlewood is fit to play, even if his workload is managed. Nathan Ellis has been in excellent form and is making a strong case to keep his spot in the attack.
Cricket Returns to Darwin
International cricket is back in Darwin for the first time since 2008. The opening game has sold out, and tickets for the second match on Tuesday are going fast. Darwin could also host a Test against Bangladesh next year as part of an extended home season.
Form Guide
-
Australia: WWWWW (last five T20Is)
-
South Africa: LLWLW
Who to Watch
Mitchell Marsh – The Australian captain had a quiet series with the bat against the West Indies, scoring 81 runs in five innings. He’s set to open with Head and will want some runs before the World Cup.
Dewald Brevis – South Africa’s top scorer in the Zimbabwe series, with 133 runs at a strike rate of 187. He brings power to the middle order and could be a key part of their World Cup plans.

Team News
Australia is without Matt Short for the first two matches as he recovers from a side strain. Marsh and Head will open, with Glenn Maxwell back in the middle order and Mitchell Owen likely batting at seven. Hazlewood adds experience to the bowling attack but may not play every game.
Probable XI: Marsh (capt), Head, Inglis (wk), Green, David, Maxwell, Owen, Dwarshuis, Ellis, Zampa, Hazlewood.
South Africa’s top order is stronger with Markram and Ryan Rickelton returning. That could push Pretorius out of the XI. George Linde may continue at number six, offering both batting and left-arm spin.
Probable XI: Markram (capt), Rickelton (wk), van der Dussen, Brevis, Stubbs, Linde, Subrayen, Bosch, Rabada, Burger, Ngidi.
Conditions
With Darwin returning as a venue, there’s some uncertainty about the pitch, but it should offer fair conditions for both teams. The forecast is for dry, mild evenings.
